Ibrox legend Barry Ferguson has sent a clear message to the underperforming Rangers squad after a run of three consecutive defeats.
Steven Gerrard’s side lost home and away against Malmo in Champions League qualifying and were downed by Dundee United at Tannadice in the Premiership.
The Gers only scored twice across the matches, while lax defending was to blame for several of the goals conceded.
They were understrength for all three games but there has still been an inexplicable contrast in performance levels from those delivered for the majority of last season and questions are being asked of the players.
Ferguson has confidence in the current group but has delivered a warning to any squad members who may feel that the ongoing backlash is over the top.
“You either learn to deal with it, or you crumble and allow it to completely overwhelm you,” he wrote in his Daily Record column.
As a winner of 15 major honours across his two spells at Rangers, Ferguson certainly knows what he’s talking about and the players would do well to take his advice on board.
A few looked like they wanted the ground to swallow them up when the Ibrox crowd began to grow increasingly restless during the second half against Malmo on Tuesday night.
The discontent transferred to social media after the game and that may have been a shock to the system for some.
However, it’s part and parcel of being a player at a massive football club in the modern era and with fixtures coming thick and fast, there’s simply no time to feel sorry for yourself.
Friday night’s Premier Sports Cup clash against Dunfermline is a potential banana skin, but the players should be viewing it as a chance to get back on track and to start the process of getting supporters back onside.
The manager has already said that the coaching staff have made one thing ‘abundantly clear’ to the squad.
