When asked about the potential links to Derby County, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard barely even flinched [Sky Sports News].
Whilst there’s been a lot of noises in the press recently about Derby’s reported interest, Steven Gerrard couldn’t have been clearer.
Money is no motivation for the Liverpool legend. Prestige is much more important. And in a head-to-head between Ibrox and Pride Park, there is only one winner.
“When I stopped playing and came out of an institution like Liverpool, there was a massive void in my life,” Gerrard told Sky Sports News.
“I’m not going to lie, I missed playing and being around that club. I’d been there since I left school.
“There was something missing but Rangers were the right fit and had the right feel. I didn’t take the decision lightly and it’s a privilege to be the manager here.
“That hasn’t changed and I’m really looking forward to season two.”
For Gerrard, old habits seem to die hard.
That same loyalty that saw him turn down the Real Madrid’s and Chelsea’s of this world whilst at Liverpool is on show at Rangers.
Granted Derby County doesn’t quite have the allure of the Bernabeu or Stamford Bridge.
But unless the call came from Anfield this season you get the feeling Steven Gerrard has no interest in jumping ship.
It’s immensely refreshing and satisfying for Rangers fans. Whilst most fans know that Stevie G won’t be at the helm forever, he will be until he is satisfied that he’s done a good job.
“We realise that to finish off a job like this, you have to bring success,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.
“Our ambitions and focus hasn’t changed.”
