Rangers have made some strange transfer decisions, one of them in the summer of 2023 was keeping Ryan Jack, but letting Scott Arfield leave at the end of his contract.
Arfield might not have been effective as he once was, however, he finished the season with nine goals and three assists off less than 2000 minutes – there was still life left in the old dog.
Now 36, Arfield has proven the doubters wrong again after returning to Falkirk via MLS and the EFL, helping the team where it all started gain promotion back to the Scottish Premiership after winning League 1 last season.
With nine goals in 13 league games, Arfield’s contribution can’t be downplayed, especially a second debut hat-trick that had the Bairns faithful singing a recent Rangers classic.
Scott Arfield might be used to hearing thousands serenading him, but after a 3-1 win over Hamilton on the final day of the season, Arfield got an extra special treat.

Scott Arfield gets personal with Saturday Night rendition
“Saturday Night” by Whigfield was heard around Ibrox on numerous occasions during his five years at the club, and it appears as though it didn’t go unnoticed with the ‘90s pop star.
In a post-match interview at the Falkirk Stadium, Arfield, for once, was left speechless when faced with Whigfield herself singing his version of the number one classic.
“Oh my god, you cannae be serious,” Arfield said when presented with a video of Whigfield congratulating him and his team on promotion back to the top flight.
“Oh my god, that’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen, that is amazing,” Arfield continued when Whigfield, incredibly not looking a day older than when she released the song in 1995, blew him a kiss.
Did Rangers make a mistake in letting Arfield go?
Arfield, in 2023, could still have done Rangers a job, there is no doubt about that.
He maybe wasn’t capable of starting every week or of playing 55-60 games, but as an impact player and as someone who could set the standard and still make a difference? Absolutely.
The alternative, Jack, was barely fit, even when he was, Beale and then Clement didn’t play him.
Yes, they are different types of midfielder, but when one is available almost every week and the other spends more time in the treatment room, it should have been an easy call to make.
Falkirk have an option to extend Arfield’s contract by another year, and he could well hear 50,000 singing his song once again – even if it won’t top Whigfield’s personal touch.
