Odsonne Edouard claims crossing Rangers Celtic divide “impossible”

Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard has described crossing the Old Firm divide and moving to Rangers as “impossible”.

The French U21 forward was cheekily asked by a journalist if he’d ever consider making the leap across the Clyde.

And as sure as day is day and night is night, he gave the answer that almost every single Rangers and Celtic fan would give.

“No, never,” said Edouard, as quoted in the Daily Record. “It’s impossible!”

Very few Rangers or Celtic players don their rivals kits in their professional careers, but there are some who’ve made the leap.

Mo Johnston – probably the most high-profile player of Irish catholic descent ever to play for Rangers and a former Celtic player/fan – stands as the most controversial.

So much so the Celtic support still call him Judas and the very mention of his name is enough to generate a snarl.

Then there’s Kenny Miller – a unique case in that he didn’t just cross the divide once.

Miller, originally of Hibs, joined Rangers, left to go to England, eventually joined Celtic, went back to England, then reappeared at Ibrox.

Despite scoring over 100 goals for Rangers, the fact he donned our rival’s kit and even scored against Rangers in an Old Firm means that for many fans he can never go down as legend.

Alfie Conn – a fine player in the 60s and 70s – was the first to cross the divide in the post-War era.

Conn first played for Rangers before joining Tottenham Hotspur and returning to Scotland with Celtic.

Former Hearts captain Steven Pressley is the most recent outfield player to have turned out for the first teams of both sides.

But young Liam Burt – someone who broke through into the first team at Ibrox – could well become the next after signing for Celtic in the summer.

And no matter what Odsonne Edouard has to say – he’d only play third fiddle to Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe…
