Ex-Rangers defender Nikola Katic scored for FC Zurich as their title march continued against a Cedric Itten-less BSC Young Boys.
The Croatian centre-back, 27, nodded hone his third FC Zurich goal of the season in a stunning 3-1 victory which puts the Swiss club top of the Super League.
FC Zurich took the lead in the match through Jonathan Okita after only six minutes, the attacker curling the ball into the bottom corner after a slack kick out.
Nikola Katic would then double the lead, rising highest from a corner to net his third goal of the season and send the FC Zurich supporters delirious.
Meschak Elia then latched onto a rebound to pull one back before halftime, with Bledian Krasniqi completing the scoring deep into injury time.
Nikola Katic firing FC Zurich to title glory
Now two points above current champions BSC Young Boys, the Champions League side will need form striker Cedric Itten back from injury to help fire them to the title.
Nikola Katic however will be doing his utmost to prevent Young Boys picking up a second straight crown, having regained it from FC Zurich last season.
The big Croatian centre-half remains a cult hero amongst the Rangers fans and took to social media in the aftermath of the potentially pivotal result.
Joining FC Zurich last summer, Rangers sold the defender to the Swiss side after a successful stint with Hadjuk Split in his homeland, where Nikola Katic won the Croatian Cup.
If FC Zurich can go on to lift the title this season it’ll be the first league championship of Nikola Katic’s career to date given he was ruled out for the Ibrox club’s 55 triumph.
Career back on track after injury hell
Rangers signed the defender for a reported £2m from Slaven Bepulo back in 2018 under Steven Gerrard and he went on to play 59 appearances and score six goals for the club.
Suffering a devastating cruciate ligament injury in the summer of 2020, it derailed his Rangers career and eventually the 6ft4 centre-back was sold on after initially being loaned out.

Now getting back to regular football in Switzerland, the defender is certainly showing Rangers what he can do and we’re sure everyone at Ibrox will keep a keen eye on Katic’s progress.
As for Cedric Itten, the striker missed the game through injury with both players in the squad at Ibrox during the 2020/21 season.
