Niko Katic prepares for Croatian Cup Final

Niko Katic is currently preparing for a huge game as his loan side Hadjuk Split take on Rijeka in the Croatian Cup final.

The on-loan defender has posted his preparations for the final on Instagram saying that he was preparing for a ‘big battle’ and that he hopes ‘God guides and protects us’ before using the prayer and trophy emoji.

It has been a tough couple of years for Katic who sadly missed the entirety of the unbeaten 20/21 league campaign through an injury and was sent out on loan to his native land this season to try and get more game time.

Will Niko Katic feature in Cup final?

Katic has made 25 appearances for Split this year, assisting one goal, however, he has not been involved in the last three fixtures so it is unknown whether the big defender will have a part to play in the Final, but he is training and raring to go.

The centre back is best known for his winning header in 2019’s Old Firm encounter at Celtic Park and has regularly sent messages of support to the club this season, including for the recent Europa League Final defeat to Frankfurt in Seville.

Do Rangers need Katic?

Rangers are currently light for central defence options next season with just Filip Helander, Jack Simpson, John Souttar and Leon King having contracts in place.

With the fitness of Helander and Souttar questionable at best and Simpson likely to leave, Leon King would be the only reliable player in that position contracted in terms of actual game time, but that would be a risk due to his age and just being promoted from the B team.

Could there be a place for Katic in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s setup or will we see the Croatian bid farewell to Ibrox for a final time?
