Nicky Hogarth travelled with Rangers squad to Gibraltar as first team carrot dangled

Nicky Hogarth travelled with the Rangers squad to Gibraltar for the Europa League second-round qualifier against Lincoln Red Imps, with Steven Gerrard giving the young goalkeeper a taste of the first-team environment.

Only two keepers were named in the official squad for the fixture – Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin – but four made the trip.

Third-choice stopper and popular figure, Andy Firth, joined Hogarth on the plane, with both players afforded the chance to get the feel for a European away day and to train on the pitch in the lead up to the match.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

For Hogarth, it’s a sign that he’s highly thought of at the club.

The 19-year-old can be spotted taking part in first-team training at Auchenhowie from time to time but a Europa League away day is a step up, giving him an insight into what he could be a part of in years to come if he continues to work hard and develop.

Despite his age, Hogarth has already experienced multiple loan stints elsewhere, representing East Stirling, Kilwinning Rangers, Caledonian Braves and most recently, Stirling Albion.

The club has big plans for its B team this season [Rangers.co.uk], so Hogarth may be hoping for imminent opportunities at that level.

However, another loan move is likely the bigger aim, with lower-league SPFL clubs starting to ramp up their recruitment ahead of the start of the Championship, League One and League Two seasons in October.

Perhaps, after a brief stint in the fourth tier with Stirling Albion before the leagues were shut down due to the global health crisis, he’ll be eyeing a move to a second or third-tier club this time around.

Either way, after Gerrard gave him a taste of the big time this week, his motivation levels should be high.
