Newcastle United are set to pip Rangers to the signing of Queens Park wonderkid Reagan Thomson, according to a Daily Record report.
The Scottish news outlet is claiming that both Rangers and rivals Celtic expressed interest in taking Thomson across Glasgow, but Newcastle have moved to get the deal done in January.
The paper claims the deal involves a “substantial fee” which will see the Scotland U17 international develop his game at St. James’ Park.
Rangers, Newcastle, Celtic and a host of “other top English clubs” are said to have watched young midfielder Thomson for the Scotland U17s last week as he carved Iceland open with two assists.
Because of Queens Park’s amateur status, Reagan Thomson wouldn’t command a transfer fee but the Glasgow southside club would be due compensation as a result of any deal.
Unfortunately for Rangers, the talented youngster now appears to be moving south of the border.
But when it comes to signing talented midfielders to the club’s Academy all does not appear to be lost at Ibrox.
Rangers are said to be the frontrunners in the pursuit of Linfield youngster Charlie Allen.
What’s more, the Ibrox club are said to be pipping a host of Premier League clubs [Belfast Telegraph] including Manchester United and Liverpool in the race for the youngster.
