Motherwell star ‘lucky’ to avoid red vs Rangers as former ref bemoans VAR

Rangers shouldn’t need a helping hand to beat Motherwell but they perhaps should have had one yesterday.

It was yet more dropped points in the Premiership with a draw at Fir Park, and the sides fight back from 2-0 down will do little to assuage supporters, as welcome as it was.

Philippe Clement rotated the side once again on the advice of sports scientists and was made to pay, later insisting he would be branded “stupid” if he didn’t listen to the guidance.

But furious Kris Boyd responded by stating Clement will get himself sacked by trusting the science too much.

On the topic of the sack, the manager insists it’s a decision for the Rangers board and insists he is not concerning himself with that chat.

It may not even be a topic of conversation if Gers had played against ten man for a spell in the game after a nasty looking tackle on Oscar Cortes.

Lennon Miller lucky to escape red vs Rangers

Rangers-linked midfielder Lennon Miller was the player in question after lunging in on the winger.

Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell was left “flabbergasted” his side had a third goal for Tony Watt ruled out for a foul on Jack Butland.

But they may have got away with one too as former ref Bobby Madden convinced the Miller tackle was worthy of a sending off.

And he insists VAR should have got involved after the referee missed it.

He wrote on Instagram: “Here you see the defender lunging over the ball and making contact on the ankle and the turn of the ankle.

“This should be a VAR intervention and quite a straightforward red card for serious foul play.”

What Kris Boyd said about Miller tackle

Boyd told Sky Sports: “I think Lennon Miller is a little bit lucky here.

“You can understand, he goes over the top of him, but he does catch Oscar Cortes on the ankle there. I think he is very lucky.”
