There were plenty of big names in attendance as Rangers bounced back in the Europa League against Steaua Bucharest.

The Ibrox side and manager Philippe Clement are under mounting pressure after a disjointed start to the season following a substantial summer rebuild.

After an excruciating defeat to Kilmarnock, Rangers romped to an impressive 4-0 victory on Europa League duties which is cause for optimism at Ibrox.

But with FCSB fielding a much changed team, Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell has revealed what Walter Smith’s former Rangers assistant Archie Knox told him in the crowd at Ibrox.

Archie Knox back at Ibrox to watch Rangers

If there is anyone who knows how to win football matches, it’s legendary former Rangers coach Archie Knox.

The 77-year-old served as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson during his time with Aberdeen and Manchester United.

But Knox is better known in these parts for his time working with Walter Smith during the 9IAR era of Rangers.

A hard-talking old-school coach of a bygone era, Archie Knox was giving Stuart Kettlewell his two cents about FCSB’s apparently changed line-up for the game.

With Motherwell’s injury list swelling ahead of the visit of Celtic to Fir Park, Kettlewell explained the ‘words of wisdom’ he received from Archie Knox.

Motherwell manager on Rangers legend’s ’words of wisdom’

“I was at Ibrox last night watching the European game (v FCSB),” Kettlewell said ahead of an injury-ravaged Motherwell’s Scottish Premiership clash with Celtic.

“I had a conversation just before the game started with Archie Knox, who just happened to be sitting in front of me.

“When you speak to guys like Archie Knox, or when he speaks I should say, you often listen.

“There was a wee bit of debate with us all surrounding the team selection with Steaua Bucharest and how they put more importance into another game, maybe made some changes to their team.

“I’ll be honest I’m not well enough qualified with their players to comment too much on that.

“But I think it was that mentality and always the wee bit of words of wisdom (from Knox) and something I agree with is that, as each game comes you want to try and pick your best team and you want to try and win the game.

“It’s as simple as that.

“If we start focusing on something that’s coming a week later or three or four days later, that day might never come.

“It’s your job to make sure that you put the best team on the pitch and it’s always good to speak to somebody like Archie.

“But I have to tell you that I agree wholeheartedly with what he was saying last night.”
