Morelos or Lafferty - Who should start?

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has one big dilemma this afternoon – who should start between Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty?

Gerrard could get away with choosing either one and satisfying supporters. Such is the strength of the Rangers squad nowadays, the Liverpool icon can’t do much wrong.

Regardless of that, however, he still has a big decision to make with regards to who starts up top. Who’s the man that should lead the line against Brendan Rodgers’ vulnerable looking Celtic?

Advantage Alfredo

Morelos perhaps shades the advantage. The Colombian has had several previous poor outings in the past against the champions, but has caused them problems. With his all-round play improving by the week, the striker could cause some real damage with his hold-up play.

Added to that, he’s coming into this one on the back of some real highs. Receiving a call-up to the Colombia national squad for the first time was a big thing for Morelos. But he’s also just signed a new contract yesterday after committing his future to the club. His confidence couldn’t be higher despite drawing a blank in the last two days.

Morelos has missed several big chances against Celtic in the past. But it’s widely agreed that if he keeps getting into those positions, he’ll bury them. A start for him this afternoon wouldn’t be undeserved.

Gerrard could, however, turn to Lafferty for inspiration against Celtic.

Lafferty’s case

Like Morelos, he seems to have really kicked on this season. Starting on fire for Hearts, he fired a stunning winner against Celtic at Tynecastle just last month. That’s part of a run where the Northern Irishman has scored in his last four against Rodgers’ men.

He is also coming into this one carrying huge confidence.

Lafferty has started his Rangers career brightly, scoring two goals in his first full 90 minutes against Motherwell last week. The Northern Irish international is a towering striker who can cause a vulnerable Celtic defence huge problems.

He also notched on Rangers’ last victory at Parkhead – a 3-1 success in 2010.

Whoever Gerrard picks, fans will be satisfied. But it could still be the biggest decision the Rangers manager makes this afternoon.
