Morelos-linked Frankfurt sign Sporting striker – big transfer boost for Gerrard?

Last week, Steven Gerrard admitted that he may be unable to stop Alfredo Morelos leaving the club if a big offer came in from elsewhere and that he was looking at potential replacements [Scottish Sun]. He could only give his opinion on the matter, but ultimately, it would be the board’s decision.

If a bid was to come in from a European side before next week’s deadline, the German heavyweights looked favourites. The Daily Record reported last month that they were preparing a ‘big money bid’, and had sent scouts to watch El Bufalo net a hat-trick against St Joseph’s in Europa League Qualifying.

Yet, it appears that Dost, who, like Morelos, is an out and out striker, was their number one target.

Frankfurt lost plenty of firepower over the course of the summer, with Sebastian Haller joining West Ham and Luka Jovic signing for Real Madrid. Ante Rebic is also said to be unsettled [TEAMtalk]. Therefore, this might not necessarily be the end of their spending.

However, having successfully recruited Dost, their need for Morelos greatly lessens. Back in June, they signed former Red Star Belgrade striker Dejan Joveljic for €4 million [TSN], while they also already have the likes of Gonçalo Paciência and Nikolai Muller as additional attacking options.

Surely they won’t look to bring in two high-profile number nines this in the window?
