Maurice Edu believes Rangers should go after Steve Davis

Maurice Edu and Steven Davis helped Rangers clinch three-in-a-row, and the former believes the latter wants to return once more.

Former Rangers star Edu was famous for his last-minute winner in an Old Firm clash against Celtic back in 2010. But outside of that he certainly achieved much success with his pal Davis at Ibrox.

Under Walter Smith, the Gers strolled their way to three championship titles in-a-row. A memorable run to the UEFA Cup final in Manchester was also achieved by the pair.

And with speculation rife that Davis could be heading back to Ibrox, Edu has thrown his weight behind it. Speaking in the Scottish Sun about the proposed move, Edu said the following:

“I would love that to happen. I had the pleasure and good fortune to play beside Steve Davis so I can speak about the qualities he has and how good a player he is.

“But he is also a great guy and a huge Rangers fan. So I think he would love to go back to Ibrox for a couple of reasons.

“A lot of us had to leave in 2012 when we would have wanted to stay on and win many more championships. I don’t want to speak out of turn, but because of that situation back then, I think Steve would really welcome the idea of going back to Rangers.”

Surely a matter of time?

This move must surely be a goer for Rangers. Everything is in their favour regarding a potential deal. Davis has widely been reported as wanting a return, and that was always going to be half the battle.

He remains an outcast at Southampton, despite the odd appearance on occasion. Outside of that, however, he’s generally been frozen out. He’s only made a total of six appearances this season – three of those have come over the last month.

Southampton’s managerial change looked like putting a block on things initially. In truth, however, it doesn’t appear to have affected anything as Davis remains out-of-favour.

Rangers have been looking for some more quality in the spine of their team. Despite having plenty of midfielders currently at the club, they still need more energy in there.

Davis would provide that as well as goals, assists, and a winning mentality. He’s the perfect fit to sign for the club in January, and Edu seems to agree.
