In an interview with Sky Sports, Mark Warburton has bigged up Rangers’ title chances.

The 56-year-old was Rangers manager from 2015 to 2017 before he left the Ibrox hot seat for Nottingham Forest.

He’s now boss of another Championship side, in QPR, who have enjoyed a mixed start to the season. They have seven points from five league matches, and a Gers loanee helped to dump them out of the League Cup on Wednesday evening.

The R’s might not be challenging for any silverware, but Warburton thinks it’s a different story altogether for the Gers.

“I am delighted to see they are spending money, which they had to do to close the gap on Celtic,” he told Sky Sports.”I believe this year is Rangers’ year.”

“I think last year was maybe a bit too early and this year is Rangers’ time. They spent wisely, the squad is stronger, and I really believe this is Rangers’ title.”

Verdict

Warburton was a divisive figure for Rangers fans, but it’s good to see he’s still keeping a close eye on all things Ibrox.

There’s no doubt the Gers have recruited well during the summer and now have the firepower across the squad to compete for the title.

During the Englishman’s time at the club, the squad was fragile and lacking in quality. Under Gerrard, the return of Steven Davis and the signings of Joe Aribo and Jermain Defoe give the side that class that was previously lacking.

The 100% start to the season points to improvements to both quality of play and mentality, too. Looking ahead, if the side can continue to raise performance levels and keep scoring goals, there’s no reason to reject Warburton’s comments. Rangers have a genuine shout in 2019/20.
