Northampton Town boss Jon Brady has all-but ruled out a move for Alex Lowry as the Rangers forward mulls over a potential loan move away from Ibrox.
With Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima and the impending addition of Jose Cifuentes increasing the competition for a starting spot in one of the attacking midfield positions, 20-year-old Alex Lowry will be under no illusions about the size of the task facing him as he looks to force his way into Mick Beale’s first-team plans.
And the fact that Lowry was with Rangers B team last week – at a time in which the senior stars were taking on Hoffenheim and Olympiakos – suggests that one of the club’s most naturally-talented academy graduates in many a year may currently be fighting a losing battle.

Alex Lowry could be set for Rangers loan exit
Beale referred to Lowry at one point as the ‘future of Rangers’.
In the present, however, the Ibrox boss reportedly believes that a season out on loan would benefit the Scotland U21 international. Northampton Town in England’s third tier has been mentioned as a potential short-term destination, though manager Brady is not currently expecting any further additions in the final months of the window (Daily Record).
“I don’t think we’ll be adding any more,” The Cobblers boss tells the Northampton Chronicle. “We might get a back-up keeper in but that’s probably us done.
“I can’t say with absolute certainty but I would say we are there or thereabouts.”
There should, at least, be plenty of other potential takers.
This is an elegant, creative attacking midfielder. One who, according to former Rangers youth coach Graeme Murty, carries himself with a ‘remarkable degree of self-confidence’ even at such a young age.
“Alex is unlike anyone else at Rangers I would suggest,” Murty told The Scotsman in 2022. “In terms of his technical ability. The range of passing that he sees and executes. His individual ability to go past people
“And he has a remarkable degree of self-confidence. He believes in himself to the upmost and he wants the ball. He’s hungry for it, and wants to make things happen.
“I remember watching him with some of the first-team staff with Michael Beale and Steven Gerrard. He is faced up with another opponent, (the) poor defender twists round in a knot.
“And Michael Beale goes ‘wow’”
