The Rangers manager’s job is once again the subject of much debate as the pressure builds on Philippe Clement.

The 50-year-old Belgian manager has seen his side slip 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table with performances failing to inspire supporters.

With Rangers 3rd in the table, it’s a return to the Mark Warburton days of old when the club struggled on their 2016 return to the Scottish Premiership.

Now, one former high-profile Rangers manager candidate in Billy Davies has been speaking about links to Ibrox way back when.

The former Derby County and Nottingham Forest manager has also intimated his intention to return to management, just as the future of Philippe Clement hangs in the balance.

Billy Davies received ‘the call’ from Rangers

“Yes (I did speak to Rangers about the job),” Billy Davies told Open Goal. “I think it was 2016/17, something like that.

”My agent gets a call from a Rangers board member. That Rangers board member tells him that the Rangers Board want to speak to me about the job.

”He tells my agent that the following morning Stewart Robertson, who I think was the finance guy.

“The following morning we’re apparently getting a call from Stewart Robertson because we’re going for an interview to become the Rangers manager.

”And we’ve not heard anything since.

“The interesting thing is since 2004 I’ve been linked to this every single year or two, my name comes up and I’ve never spoken to the club. They’ve never even gave me an interview.

”The agent got the call. He got the call from the board member. The board member told him Stewart Robertson was going to call me the following day, call him the following day, and the call never came in.”

Billy Davies on hunt for manager’s gig

A boyhood bluenose, Billy Davies came through the ranks at Rangers during his playing days in the early 1980s.

Spending his first five years at Ibrox, Davies made his debut as a teenager but failed to make a big enough impression on the first-team.

Going on to carve out a 17 year career playing in Sweden, England and Scotland, Davies is more famous for his time in football management.

And the 60-year-old – who has been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2014 – claims he’s ready to return to the dugout.

”I am ready to go,” said Davies. “I am desperate to get the boots back on again.

”I’ve never felt more prepared and more ready on and off the pitch. I’ve never felt more passionate and more enthusiastic about taking on this next chapter.

”I cannot wait to get tore into the players, I cannot wait to get tore into the team.

”I cannot wait to get back to my day job because it’s a game that I love. You’ll never turn me against this game.”
