Rangers are facing a battle to sign Swansea City’s Morgan Whittaker this summer with manager Steven Schumacher admitting he ‘would love’ to bring the midfielder back to Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth’s hopes are likely to rest on whether Schumacher can bring Championship football back to Home Park for the first time in over a decade. Fortunately, the Argyle boss is very well placed to do just that.

Plymouth are currently top of the League One table, six points clear of third-place Sheffield Wednesday with two games remaining. Their promotion may become official this weekend.

And while Whittaker may have said his goodbyes three months ago – recalled by parent club Swansea City, much to the player’s chagrin – a tally of 18 goals or assists in 25 League One games during the first half of the campaign means his contributions will not be forgotten.

“If we could afford him, we would love to sign Morgan Whittaker,” Schumacher tells the BBC; asked about bringing back the former England U20 international on a permanent basis.

“He’s obviously played a huge part in our success this year. (He) helped us get to where we’ve got to in the league, and he really enjoyed it.

“We get on really well. He was a brilliant player for us and he enjoyed it.”

Whittaker reunited with Schumacher this week, travelling to Devon for Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers.

A left-footed forward with wonderful shooting ability from long-range; the silky 22-year-old is once again on the radar of a Rangers side who made three separate bids during the January transfer. The largest, Fabrizio Romano reports, coming in at £2 million.

The Daily Record, meanwhile, believe that Whittaker is ‘keen’ to move north of the border.

But Schumacher may have an ace up his sleeve; the Plymouth boss enjoying an excellent relationship with Whittaker.

“If we were in the realms of being able to bring him back to the club then we would,” Schumacher adds. “Because we think he could do a job in the Championship with the way we play.”
