Work is underway on a new pitch at Ibrox as Rangers look to resolve an ongoing problem and receive a big boost for the 2021/22 season.

The Ibrox surface looked in relatively good condition for the final fixture of the 2020/21 season against Aberdeen, just as it did for the first fixture played there against St Mirren in August.

It’s the middle period of the campaign that has been the issue in recent seasons, though, with the pitch seemingly unable to withstand poor winter weather.

Supporters voiced concerns in February and the club are now taking action, with major work underway.

CEO of SIS Pitches, George Mullan, confirmed in a tweet earlier this month that his company would be undertaking work at Ibrox and the dust had barely settled on the club’s title celebrations before it began.

Time is of the essence with a glamour friendly against Arsenal scheduled for mid-July and after an image emerged earlier this week showing that this season’s surface had already been ripped up, diggers could be spotted moving in and out of the stadium on Tuesday.

A slick, consistent playing surface is crucial to the Gers’ exciting playing style and a more durable pitch for 2021/22 would be a big boost to their hopes of defending their Premiership crown.

In other news, Rangers fans have expressed anger on social media after key communications between the club and the Scottish Government emerged.
