At the moment, Rangers have a way to go to be in a title challenge.
It is not completely out of the question. You only have to look back to last season after Philippe Clement’s appointment to see how possible it is to drag yourselves back in.
That ultimately ended in disappointment and it would be surprising, on current evidence, if we end up seeing a title race again.
January could always have a bearing if Nils Koppen can bring in some first-team ready players who can hit the ground running.
Rangers have already been linked with a trio of stars as the rumour mill ramps up ahead of the winter window opening.
While Koppen has hinted there may be signings from Scotland as they look to shift towards targeting homegrown talent.
Scott Allan: Rangers need six or seven transfers in
Pundit Scott Allan certainly thinks the transfer market would need to be heavily used in order for Clement to launch another unlikely title charge.
The one-time Rangers target doesn’t see the current side being able to put together the sort of run required to get themselves back in contention.
That is why he foresees them needing as many as seven new faces if the title is the goal.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show, Allan said: “Rangers do need recruits come January.
“To challenge for the league I think they need another six, seven.
“I’m not saying win it. To give Rangers a chance where they can go on a run.
“Right now with the team, with the squad that they have I wouldn’t be confident in saying Rangers could go five games in the league unbeaten with five wins.”
What positions do Rangers need to strengthen?
Allan had has assertion queried by host Peter Martin who seemed incredulous he was suggesting as many as seven new additions.
So he laid it out and went through each position he thinks needs strengthened – and worked his way through pretty much the whole team.
The Kelty Hearts man added: “Two strikers. I still think they need a creative midfielder and another winger, so we’re on four already.
“Another defender…five already.
“To challenge that Celtic team, never mind Aberdeen or anyone else, I think they need five or six.”
Tam McManus agreed, insisting: “I agree. I think Rangers need better quality in certain areas.
“Certainly the front areas. I think Cerny’s been decent, he’s been the one. Bajrami started well but I’m not convinced about him.”
