Japan international forward Kyogo Furuhashi scored the only goal of the game in first-half injury time.
Tavernier started the match at right-back.
The 31-year-old played for the entire 90 minutes.
Tavernier is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership and is a key figure for Rangers.
However, the former Wigan Athletic defender had a disappointing game against Celtic.
Tavernier could not get up the pitch as much as he normally does and was far from great defensively.
While the right-back stepped up his game late in the game, it was a disappointing performance from him overall.
