Prospective midfield Rangers signing Bongani Zungu has turned down a move to La Liga with his heart set on a move to Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.
The report claims that Zungu, 27, turned down the opportunity to join either Spanish outfit Celta Vigo or Amiens’ previous Ligue 1 rivals Strasbourg to play at Rangers.
The Daily Record believes that “Liverpool-daft” Zungu’s head was turned by the interest of Steven Gerrard and the project the Anfield legend is undertaking in Glasgow.
They also claim both Celta Vigo and Strasbourg had bids accepted for the player.
It’s not the first time interest from La Liga hasn’t come off concerning Zungu, with a €5m move to Mallorca falling through in January after Amiens could not sign a replacement [Soccer Laduma].
Rangers have reportedly reached an agreement with Amiens over “massive Reds fan” Zungu after weeks of negotiations.
First linked to Ibrox by Joe Crann at the start of July, the journalist revealed via the Scotsman this week that a fee of around £3.6m (€4m) had been agreed between Rangers and Amiens.
This was backed up by reputable French outlet L’Equipe who believe the midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal at Ibrox.
Whilst there is little-known about the 29-cap South African midfielder in Scotland, there is great hope for Zungu back in his homeland.
So much so that a raft of South African supporters have been expressing their delight over the prospective move and have pledged to follow Rangers if a deal comes off.
