Lille president explains why Rangers signed Rafael Fernandes as he makes ‘very important point’

It is not exactly a mystery as to why Rafael Fernandes departed Lille for Rangers during the winter window having not made a single Ligue 1 appearance in 12 months at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.

Rafael Fernandes was stuck behind Leny Yoro in the LOSC Lille pecking order, after all, following his £2.5 million switch from Portuguese outfit Arouca in January 2024.

And, when Yoro left for Manchester United that following summer, the Sporting Lisbon academy graduate found himself struck down by injury as he was denied the chance to make a first-team spot his own under Bruno Genesio.

As such, Rafael Fernandes arrives at Rangers, much to the excitement of Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen, with a point to prove and a reputation to burnish.

The former Portugal Under-21 international made his Ibrox debut off the bench as Rangers cruised past Ross County on Sunday, and a first start could be on it’s way as second-tier Queens’ Park travel to Glasgow in the Scottish Cup this weekend.

Back in France, meanwhile, Lille president Olivier Letang spoke out about Fernandes’ departure for the first time as he explained the reasoning behind that mid-season switch.

Lille president explains why Rafael Fernandes left for Rangers

“There is a very important point; You have to have a very high level to play at LOSC. It also takes time for some [to adapt],” Letang said during the unveiling of former Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Ajax striker Chuba Akpom.

“Rafael was injured a lot. I have a lot of respect for the club he was at [Arouca], but the intensity and the work process were probably not the same and he was injured a lot. He needed playing time, but he is someone we believe in.”

Actions speak louder than words, however.

And while Letang claims to have plenty of faith in Fernandes, that did not stop Lille from including an option-to-buy clause in his Rangers contract.

Should the 6ft 3ins Iberian impress – Rangers feel he is well-suited to Philippe Clement’s aggressive defensive approach – then Fernandes would be in line to become a permanent member of the roster.

Lille felt Fernandes need a purchase clause in his Ibrox contract

“These players [who we loaned out] didn’t have much playing time,” Letang adds, Fernandes spending much of his time in France stuck in Lille’s youth team.

“For those who went to the reserve team, they were able to see that Rafael Fernandes was way above the rest. We can say that it’s normal, but [his talent] still needs to be proven.”

Letang also shed some light on why Lille were willing to hand control over to Rangers regarding the 22-year-old’s future.

“In the discussions [with Rangers and co], a straight loan was not an option, otherwise the clubs would have been less inclined to sign him. It was really fundamental that they have playing time, so we preferred to make this choice so that they can play.”

According to reports, Rafael Fernandes had offers from Spain, Germany and rival French clubs before opting to put pen to paper with Rangers.

One of his former Sporting Lisbon coaches thinks Fernandes possesses the pace and physicality to thrive in Scottish football, meanwhile. Furthermore, an eye-catching passing range should, alongside natural left-footer Clinton Nsiala, improve Rangers’ ability to play out from the back.
