Legendary Rangers midfielder Steven Davis admits he “couldn’t turn down” the chance to become interim manager of the club.
The 38-year-old Northern Ireland icon is currently recovering from a devastating cruciate ligament injury which has threatened to prematurely end his glittering career.
But whilst Steven Davis has always harboured ambitions to become the Rangers manager, the opportunity to lead the club has come a little sooner than initially planned.
The Ulsterman is set to take interim charge of Rangers for the next two matches at least with former Ibrox midfielder Alex Rae at his side following the sacking of Michael Beale.

Steven Davis “couldn’t turn down” Rangers manager chance
“Obviously, management is something I’ve considered further down the line,” Steven Davis told RangersTV.
“To get this opportunity, I wasn’t expecting so it didn’t really cross my mind, I just think it’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge. Everyone knows what the club means to me. My approach is just going to be the way I was as a player in all my time here at the club and that’s just to give it my best and hopefully that’ll be good enough.
“You have to be your own person. I’ve managed to work with some incredible managers. Walter, a legend of this club. It was a great honour to play under him for so many years and have the relationship that I did with him.
“At Southampton I played under some great managers as well, like [Mauricio] Pochettino and Ronald Koeman and internationally with Michael O’Neill as well, whom I’ve got a really close relationship with.
“I’ve been fortunate to play under a number of really good managers and I’ll pick up a lot of things from them as well over the years and try and implement some of the those things that they’ve shown me.”

Steven Davis also takes charge of Rangers after outgoing boss Michael Beale tipped him to become a “future manager” of the Ibrox club.
Whilst the English coach might not have foreseen the Davo taking charge so soon, the prediction is now set to ring true when the Ibrox Hall of Famer takes charge of the team v AEL Limassol.
With Rangers to take their time as they hope to make the right appointment, it is unlikely to be Steven Davis’ last match as interim manager either.
