Legendary former Bayern star has his say on Rangers visit to RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has once again written off Rangers ahead of their clash with RB Leipzig as he brands the Ibrox side “third-rate”.

The legendary former German international midfielder launched a scathing attack on the Ibrox side in February as he claimed Borussia Dortmund “disgraced” themselves by losing to the Ibrox club.

Here’s what the outspoken German World Cup winner said about Borussia Dortmund’s exit back then, via Scottish Sun:

“Dortmund has achieved a very special treble this season of embarrassing cup disasters in the Champions League, DFB Cup and now the Europa League.

“The latest was losing to a third rate team, Glasgow Rangers, in the Europa League. Unbelievable.

“They have disgraced themselves in all three competitions.

“I am aware it is difficult to challenge Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, but to let far worst teams defeat you in the cup competitions can’t be allowed.

“I very much doubt Rangers, Sporting Lisbon or St Pauli have anywhere near as much economic power as Borussia Dortmund and yet they have lost to them all.

“Maybe a fresh start is needed so BVB don’t embarrass themselves against third-rate teams and the title is over by February.”

Lothar Matthaus backing RB Leipzig to beat Rangers

Now, Lothar Matthaus is back again ahead of Rangers’ visit to RB Leipzig as he brands the German side “clear favourites” against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men.

“I think RB Leipzig are the clear favourites against Rangers,” said Lotthar Matthaus [Scottish Sun].

“We should enjoy that two great German clubs are in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

“For a long time, we were disappointed with the international performance of our teams.

“And again this year the performance in the Champions League was anything but glorious.

“But Eintracht Frankfurt continues to write such a great success story in this competition and RB also deserves a lot of respect.

“The chance of a final with two teams from our league, with a great atmosphere in the great stadium in Seville on a hot night would be a wonderful ending for these two likeable clubs.”

Perhaps Rangers will be looking to use the words of Lotthar Matthaus as inspiration as they head to Germany and prepare to face off against RB Leipzig.

There’s a lot made regarding pinning these sorts of comments to the wall and the Rangers team might be motivated by the arrogance in Germany heading into the match.

But if Lotthar Matthaus is being overconfident, Leipzig certainly are not as the Germans come across very respectful heading into the tie.
