Legendary Champions League-winning midfielder Dejan Stankovic could’ve joined Rangers way back in 1998.
The industrious Serbian midfielder was a famed member of Joe Mourinho’s Champions League-winning Inter team back in 2010.
But it was when the goal-scoring centre-mid left Red Star Belgrade for Serie A side Lazio that Stankovic revealed Rangers were interested.

In an interview with Sky Italia, reported by Sempre Inter, Stankovic said: “When I was 18-19 I was close to PSG and Roma along with Lazio, as well as the Glasgow Rangers. Savicevic knew me, but I had no contact with AC Milan.”
Stankovic, now 41, wouldn’t end up at Rangers but instead the Olympic Stadium in Rome where he spent six years with Lazio.
After moving to Inter Milan in 2004, Stankovic would spend nine years at the San Siro with his imposing, technical midfield presence becoming synonymous with the Nerazzurri.
Scoring over 100 goals from the middle of the park in his career, Stankovic also earned 103 caps for Serbia and is regarded as one of the country’s greatest ever players.

Stankovic’s impassioned playing style and winning mentality – he won 25 major honours in his career – would’ve surely seen him a fan favourite at Ibrox.
It would’ve been some signing to bring Dejan Stankovic to Rangers back then and the Serbian’s comments will have Gers fans wondering what might’ve been.
