Lee McCulloch and Allan McGregor have a great relationship, and the former believes the latter is the true Rangers captain.
McGregor has made a series of stunning stops since arriving at Ibrox in the summer. It’s his second spell at the club after previously winning three-in-a-row under Walter Smith between 2009 and 2011.
He has a history of success in Glasgow, and knows what it takes to win big games. Being the Gers goalkeeper during the club’s famous run to the UEFA Cup final in 2008, McGregor has plenty of experience.
McCulloch, speaking in his column in the Evening Times, has now claimed that McGregor is the Rangers captain in everything but title.
“For me, Greegsy is a captain. He doesn’t need the armband on to prove it, though.
“He just shows it with the way he acts on and off the park and in the dressing room and he will set the standard amongst the players.
“He’s been a revelation this season but I am not surprised in the slightest because the guy is a winner. And he is one helluva goalkeeper.”
Incredible turnaround
McGregor deserves huge credit for turning around fan opinion on him. Many didn’t want him beforehand given the way he left the club before liquidation. Now, however, he’s been racking up 13 clean sheets for club and country this season to turn fan opinion around.
Given his experience, the Scotland number one is a natural leader at Ibrox. He’s been there and done it, and knows all about what it takes to be a success at Ibrox.
Take nothing away from current captain James Tavernier. He’s now been at the club for three-and-a-half years and made a sensational 169 appearances for the Ibrox side, fully meriting the armband. Tavernier is one of the most improved players at Rangers, and has become the first name on Steven Gerrard’s team-sheet.
McGregor, however, is one of just a number of leaders in the Rangers dressing room. He symbolises the character that’s been instilled at Ibrox this season, with so many different personalities looking to lead and command the side.
McGregor has been captain in the past, and is likely going to be it again one day. Given his recent performances, he could still have a long career ahead of him in Govan.
McCulloch is spot on, however, as McGregor continues to silence his critics on a weekly basis.
