New Rangers signing James Sands has been snapped in first-team training for the first time as manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst opens up on what the club’s latest recruit can bring.

The USA international has joined on an 18-month loan deal from MLS Cup champions New York City FC with Rangers Sands’ first foray into the European game.

A versatile 21-year-old who can operate as a defensive midfielder, a centre-back or even a right-back, Rangers are said to have pipped a host of clubs from the likes of Germany to sign Sands.

“Versatile talent” James Sands joins up at Rangers Training Centre

Speaking to RangersTV, Giovanni van Bronckhorst opened up on the player and his early expectations of James Sands at Ibrox.

“I think James can give a lot to the squad. He is a young talent,” said GVB.

“It’s very good to have him here because he is very versatile, he can play in defence, he can play in midfield. We are just going to use him for the coming 18 months.

“I think he will be a great addition to the squad. We are all happy to develop him even further and to make him a better player.”

Since making his MLS debut in 2017, new Rangers signing James Sands has featured in 65 games, with 30 of those coming last season in the club’s triumphant MLS campaign.

Sands also earned six of his seven USA caps at the 2021 Gold Cup as the USA lifted the tournament, beating Mexico 1-0 in the final.

Whilst James Sands is Rangers’ only signing of the window so far, he’s certainly not the only player being linked to Ibrox.
