The entire Rangers team didn’t cover themselves in glory last night, but one area in particular continues to prove a problem for the club.

Rangers lack bite, creativity and above all else, ability in midfield. Coulibaly and Ejaria are miles off it at the moment. Not that it matters in the long term for them – they’re loanees.

Ryan Jack needs to be doing more. He seems a cult hero amongst fans for some reason, but he contributes little offensively for Rangers. It’s hugely frustrating.

What’s the answer? Well, the January transfer window poses all kinds of possibilities. Steven Davis, Kieran Dowell and/or every player who we’re linked with between now and February.

But if it’s bite, passion, creativity and goals we’re looking for, we need not look any further than Greg Docherty.

The youngster has been a revelation at times with Shrewsbury Town and has six goals for the season for the League One outfit. He’s also a fan favourite in Shropshire.

But a diehard Rangers fan, he’d be giving everything in that midfield and jump at the chance of coming back up. He has energy, power and goals. Not one of those Rangers midfielders stepped up to the plate last night. You can bet Docherty would.

I had previously suggested Rangers give Doc the season at Shrewsbury.

But if we have the option of recalling him in January, then Gerrard really has no choice.

Rangers need quality depth in the middle of the park.
