Lafferty's injury gives unlikely partnership the chance to shine

Umar Sadiq in for Kyle Lafferty against Dundee? That could be the alternative Steven Gerrard goes for to continue with the two up top experiment.

Rangers could be without their star-man Lafferty this Saturday against the Dees after he picked up a knock on international duty. Whilst Michael O’Neill stated he was just being rested, the big forward struggled with a knock against Bosnia.

This could provide Rangers fans with an opportunity to finally see what Sadiq can offer them going forward. You also get the feeling this could be one of Sadiq’s final chances to get consistent football.

When Lafferty is fit and Gerrard goes for the two up top then he’s automatically going to be in with Morelos. He’s the second-best striker at the club and is a proven goalscorer at this level.

The patient man

This means that Sadiq will have to patiently wait for opportunities such as this one. Lafferty’s injury is only likely to be a minor knock, so on-loan Roma forward Sadiq may not have long to impress.

In recent days, Darren Bent confirmed he would be highly interested in a move to Rangers. The worries of consistent niggling injuries this season could see Gerrard make a move for the forward.

Bent, who’s out of contract, wouldn’t cost Rangers a penny on transfer fees. Whether signing him would just be added cover or an admission Sadiq can’t cut it is down to your own opinion.

But Sadiq could get his big break this weekend. The Nigerian forward was impressive in a reserve clash against St Mirren a couple of weeks ago. Bagging a brace and setting up a couple more, it was a performance of a player itching to impress.

Gerrard could, of course, take the option to just revert to one up front this weekend. If he does, however, that would be a massive slap in the face to Sadiq. It would seem as though the manager doesn’t trust him to come in and make an impression.

This is why, should Lafferty miss out, we could probably see the unlikely partnership of Sadiq and Morelos. It’s down to Sadiq, however, when it comes to how much more we’ll see of that pairing.
