As quoted by the Scottish Sun, La Liga chief, Javier Tebas, has claimed that all European domestic leagues are planned to return in mid-May, suggesting Rangers could finish their Premiership campaign after all.

Ever since all professional and grassroots football was suspended in Scotland last Friday amid the global health crisis, there’s been plenty of speculation and uncertainty.

Many officials, pundits and fans have had their say and with the crisis only set to worsen in the UK, a resumption of the 2019/20 season has looked unlikely.

However, concrete action taken by governing bodies has ensured it remains a possibility.

UEFA have pushed back Euro 2020 by a year in order to free up space for domestic leagues, while the current suspension in place in Scotland only runs until 30 April.

La Liga boss, Tebas, has claimed that date is more than just symbolic, too, as there’s currently a plan in place to resume football across Europe just a few weeks later.

“The plan is to be able to resume all European leagues in mid-May,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “All of them.’

“It will depend on how the pandemic evolves. It could be before, but that is the date we’ve got in mind about being able to resume. We don’t want to change any season. We haven’t planned for that.

“We’re trying to resume all competitions. A joint ruling for everything. It’s impossible to just resolve the Spanish league.”

Verdict

There’s clearly a consensus in Spain that resuming the league is the best course of action and one that will, in time, be possible.

That’s as Spanish Football Federation president, Luis Rubiales, recently stated it would be ‘unfair’ to not play the remaining fixtures and crown Barcelona champions [AS].

Tebas believes in a Europe-wide solution amidst these unprecedented times, but it doesn’t appear that the SFA and SPFL share his optimism around the potential restart date.

The La Liga chief has claimed here that playing fixtures even early May would be a realistic prospect, but contrastingly, the Scottish authorities have already expressed concerns about the viability of an international fixture against Israel taking place in June [Scottishfa.co.uk].
