Kwame Poku in Cole Palmer comparison as Rangers consider winger transfer swoop

The January transfer window can’t open quickly enough for Rangers fans and Philippe Clement alike with his team still lacking quality.

One area of his squad that is still short is of a difference maker or two is the forward line and, in particular, someone on the wing to excite the Ibrox masses.

Rangers are said to have watched Kwame Poku scoring a hat-trick for Peterborough United against Cambridge United in a local derby, but the 23-year old reckons comparisons to one of England’s best are premature.

Kwame Poku can achieve dreams if he signs for Rangers

Poku has already been capped by Ghana and has aspirations of becoming a regular fixture at international level as told to the Posh Unlimited podcast and the winger’s current form is more than good enough, if he can replicate it at a higher level.

Rangers can point to players like Fashion Sakala, Cyriel Dessers, Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey being picked for African nations as an example of how moving to the SPFL wouldn’t be a barrier.

Currently competing with Cole Palmer at the top of English football’s goal contribution chart, Puko was asked on Peterborough’s official podcast if he has been keeping an eye on the table:

“In terms of me, I don’t feel like I’m in competition with anyone, but I feel like, if I want to do better than last season, I’m going to have to do everything,” Poku said as he laughed off the comparison to Palmer.

“Last season, I thought it was a good season, but if I want a season better than that then I have to start from minute one.

“Every little assist counts and helps.”

On speculation linking the flying winger with a move away from League One, he said:

“Pre-season was a bit stressful, I can’t lie, it’s the first time I’ve kind of been in this situation just in terms of life, you’re getting to that stage where you’re 23 and you have the ability to change a lot of situations going on in your private life.

“By me focussing on what I’m doing on the pitch, it will just come naturally.”

If he continues what he is doing, with a goal contribution every game, it won’t just be Rangers sending scouts to watch him.
