Rangers legend Kris Boyd again hit out at the club’s ‘atrocious’ recruitment as summer signings Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers flop in the 2-1 Europa League defeat to Aris Limassol.
If any moment summed up Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers career, it occurred early in the second half during a truly abysmal, end-of-days sort of performance in Cyprus.
As the Aris goalkeeper spilled an Abdallah Sima shot, Dessers mistimed his leap on the rebound, the ball awkwardly bouncing of his chest before the £4 million summer signing was flagged for offside anyway.

It was the act of a striker totally devoid of confidence. And, if you were to scour through an increasingly-irate series of posts on the site formerly known as Twitter, you’ll have seen that Dessers is now entering ‘Filip Sebo’ territory in the eyes of some sick-to-the-back-teeth Rangers supporters.
Fellow summer signing Sam Lammers did not escape the glare either. Ineffective and largely insipid as Rangers produced their worst, most disjointed display of the season.
Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers flop again in Rangers loss
“Rangers have a lot of work to do, there’s no doubt. Beale has already lost his job, Davis has put a team out and again they’ve let the club down. Performance levels were nowhere near what is required if you’re to be a Rangers player,” a furious Boyd told Sky Sports as Rangers undid all that good work against Real Betis a fortnight earlier.
“Some of the players really need to have a hard look at themselves, there’s no doubt about it. I’m glad I’m going to go and walk my dog because it’s more exciting than what I have just watched.
“The recruitment has been atrocious. It’s so bad. The new players have failed to hit the heights expected of them and some of the other players have been there for too long as well.
“The fans have been let down again tonight.”
Manager search ongoing
Between them, two forwards who set Rangers back an eye-watering £7.5 million have just four goals to show from 29 appearances for the Glasgow giants.
Whoever takes over from Mick Beale has an almighty task on his hands resuscitating a number of Gers careers – Dessers’ death rattle almost audible on a sticky Aris pitch – but Lammers’ could be forgiven for hoping Pascal Jansen is given the nod.
Lammers, after all, scored 30 goals in just 63 games under AZ Alkmaar boss Jansen during their time together in PSV Eindhoven’s second team.
