Philippe Clement has had a good week which will have silenced some doubters.
Two wins in three days has painted a better picture for Rangers, the first a thrilling 4-0 thumping of Ligue 1 side Nice on Thursday – another magical Europa League night.
Today’s was less attractive but a win nonetheless as Gers edged past St Johnstone but needed a second half own goal from Jason Holt do so.
Clement admitted Rangers still have some ‘working points’ as he looks to improve the the team and also bluntly shut down a reporter’s question on the subject.
But the manager is insistent things are improving and will continue to do so.
More wins and clean sheets will certainly help him convince others of that being the case.
Simon Mignolet backs Rangers boss Clement
Simon Mignolet is a former Liverpool goalkeeper who won 35 caps for Belgium.
He is also a former Club Brugge star having been signed by Philippe Clement during his successful spell at the Belgian giants.
He enjoyed working under his countryman and as a result has the utmost confidence in his managerial abilities.
As a result, Mignolet is insisting Clement will come good at Ibrox and is urging Rangers fans to show some patience.
He told the Sunday Mail: “There isn’t a more hard-working person than Philippe and I’m sure, given the chance, he’ll do well for Rangers. I’d stick with him. This guy knows what he’s doing.
“He has shown in the past how good he is. Of course, there will be times when results are not going your way.
“I know Glasgow Rangers are a big club and if results aren’t good there will be pressure. But if there’s one guy who has got confidence in Philippe then it’s me.
“He was unbelievable for myself and for Club Brugge. We had a great time with him and we’re still in touch.
“Philippe was the manager who brought me back to the club and we won a lot of titles with him. So I can only speak really highly of him.”
Clement’s take on Rangers win over St Johnstone
Pleased with the win, the manager also admitted his team still has some improvements to make in certain areas.
Unsurprisingly those areas are in the final third of the pitch after another domestic game in which they didn’t find a rhythm. They did of course show what they’re capable of in France.
Clement said: “A well deserved victory, domination all the game. We only gave one shot on target away but you need to score more goals to be more sexy, to be what we want to be for our fans, to be more entertaining in that way.
“But also to kill the belief of the opponent so that is still a working point.
“But I see a lot of positive things with the squad – players growing, becoming better, doing the right things more and more.
“So it is important after a European trip big victory to react domestically also and to get the deserved points and that was the case.”
Asked if being ‘sexier’ should come easier to his side than it does, he replied: “Is that easy? No, it’s not easy.
“With a lot of teams in the world they don’t score three, four goals so it is not like that.
“And we have maybe also the bad luck that last couple of weeks we played against goalkeepers who played the game of their lives. Today, like last week, the goalkeeper made really good saves.”
