Key issue with Rangers targeting Lyall Cameron named as expectations tempered

The possibility of Rangers signing Lyall Cameron is looking more and more real.

The Dundee star has long been mentioned as someone Gers could and perhaps should be targeting but there wasn’t really anything concrete.

However, Philippe Clement then namechecked Cameron as someone to watch before the two sides faced each other at Dens Park recently.

That set tongues wagging but there was more to come.

Reports then emerged suggesting Rangers ARE looking at the 22-year-old as a potential signing, with his contract coming to and end this summer.

It was claimed the Light Blues are actually the frontrunners for his signature.

Dundee boss Tony Docherty has claimed Cameron definitely won’t be leaving in January so it may have to be a summer deal that is settled for.

In that instance a compensation fee would have to be paid, in the same fashion as what happened with Connor Barron after his move from Aberdeen, a tribunal eventually deciding the fee.

Andy Halliday has already told Rangers they should be signing Cameron along with his teammate Josh Mulligan, described as an “athletic monster.”

Michael Stewart has now given his take.

Michael Stewart’s take on Cameron for Rangers

Rangers have been criticised over the years for not signing enough Scottish talent after passing up on the likes of Lewis Ferguson, Aaron Hickey, Josh Doig and Lawrence Shankland, to name but a few.

Barron has been in and out of the side and Cameron would no doubt be similar.

But the general consensus seems to be that it would be a smart, low-risk signing to bring in a known quantity as a squad player.

Stewart does agree with that but does have one issue. He feels Rangers are only now reacting to the criticism for ingoring Scottish talent and would be getting a player who isn’t at the level of ones they’ve missed out on.

Speaking on the Premier Sports Social Club, he said: “Not a bad signing. But what is smacks to me of is that the club recognising they’ve ignored the domestic market too much.

“But, with the greatest of respect to Lyall Cameron, I don’t think he’s nearly as good as some of the guys they’ve missed out on in the last four or five years.

“So it’s like they’re recognising their mistake and looking to rectify it with somebody that I think perhaps isn’t at the level of some of the ones they’ve missed out on.

“But the beauty of the domestic market is, with somebody like Lyall Cameron, you wouldn’t be having to spend a fortune.

“So even if he wasn’t to hit their heights, there’s not a lot lost. And you’ve got the UEFA aspect of having the domestic quality to hit the quotas that you need to hit in your squad.”

What Philippe Clement said about Cameron

Before the Dundee clash, Clement said: “I have a lot of respect for Tony Docherty. His team is always very competitive, they make it really difficult for opponents.

“They are really good in transition, they have a lot of good players in transition. Three front players really good in that way.

“Lyall Cameron also, a very good midfielder, creative midfielder, with decisive action in the last pass and a good solid base behind him also.

“So, we know it’s going to be a game where we need to break over the wall, see that we don’t run in the transitions.

“We need to take lessons out of the Hibs game to be better, to win those duels more.”
