Kevin van Veen allegedly claimed Rangers wanted him – but has now hit out at ‘clickbait’ claims in the Scottish media.

Rangers fans were left a little puzzled after seeing quotes attributed to Kevin van Veen late on Tuesday night.

The Scottish Sun published quotes in which Van Veen claimed that Rangers wanted him after his exploits at Motherwell last season.

Michael Beale was in the market for another striker and Van Veen’s name was on the wish list.

The 32-year-old hit 29 goals in 44 games last season, becoming a Fir Park hero.

Van Veen decided to leave for a return to the Netherlands, joining FC Groningen after their relegation from the Eredivisie.

Van Veen suggested that he may have been out of Rangers’ ideal age range, but claimed that a move to Ibrox was under consideration.

The quotes included Van Veen claiming that his move back to the Netherlands has ‘not worked out’ as hoped and he was open to leaving.

Van Veen allegedly talked up a return to Scotland to Motherwell whilst mentioning Rangers’ interest.

It was also suggested that Van Veen had clashed with boss Dick Lukkien and that a loan exit in January would be the sensible move.

Well, Van Veen has now spoken to RTV Noord in the Netherlands and claims that the story is all ‘clickbait’.

Van Veen claims that he isn’t playing because he doing enough off the ball, rather than because of a clash with the manager.

“I am not playing at the moment because I do not meet what is asked of me defensively. That’s the reason. This is a newspaper that apparently wants to create clickbait and a situation around me,” said Van Veen.

This whole situation has become even more confusing, with fans having no idea what Van Veen has or hasn’t said at this point.

Don’t expect to see Van Veen join Rangers

One thing we can be fairly sure about is that Van Veen surely won’t be joining Rangers any time soon.

Maybe Rangers did look at Van Veen last season but a move just doesn’t add up now.

Rangers already have summer signings Cyriel Dessers and Danilo in attack, and they cost significant fees over the summer.

Adding Van Veen – who isn’t exactly starring in the second tier of Dutch football – just doesn’t make sense given where Philippe Clement wants to take the club.

Groningen will be trying to get to the bottom of what Van Veen has actually said, but Rangers probably won’t even be paying attention.
