Kevin Thomson vs Robbie Keane was a battle many should remember well, and the former Rangers man has made sure the Republic of Ireland star hasn’t forgotten it either.
Keane today announced his retirement from football after a fruitful career. The former Wolves man played for the likes of Spurs, LA Galaxy, and Liverpool in a varied career.
Yet, it was his time at Celtic that people in Glasgow will remember most. And it was his first Old Firm derby that Rangers fans certainly remember best from his time up north.
Thomson sent a cheeky Twitter dig to Keane after hearing of his retirement. After taking the time to praise the Irishman’s achievements in the game, Thomson couldn’t resist reminding him of his first taste of Old Firm action.
A day to remember for Rangers
Keane’s performance in that contest was remembered for the challenges he took. Thomson and Madjid Bougherra were the two players who got tore into him from the start. In the end, Keane went without any real sniff of goal as Rangers won the game 1-0 – Marucie Edu bagging the winner. You’ll remember it now.
It’s not the first time Thomson has spoken about his meeting with Keane that day either. In the past, he said the former Liverpool man was “sh****** himself” throughout the game due to the treatment.

Thomson subsequently had one of his best performances ever in a Rangers shirt that day. It was effectively the game that pushed Rangers over the line to their second league championship in a row, and Thomson’s second at the club.
The former Hibs man left the club after a trophy-laden three-years in Glasgow. Two league titles, two Scottish League Cups. and one Scottish Cup to his name wasn’t bad going.
Now, you can hear Thomson doing work for Rangers TV from time to time. He also runs his own academy in Edinburgh. For any midfield aggressors that are trying to make their name in the game, a video of Thomson vs Keane would be a good lesson for them.
