Rangers are on the verge of appointing Kevin Thelwell as the club’s new director of football after months of searching for the perfect candidate.

The Everton director is set to leave Goodison Park in the summer after three challenging years at the club, with Thelwell making a positive impact despite financial cutbacks.

Reports have suggested that Thelwell has agreed the move to Rangers with attentions quickly turning to who will now follow the 51-year-old into the club as manager.

But before the next Rangers manager is announced, the club finally looks set to replace another crucial executive position at Auchenhowie.

Rangers to appoint Academy Director in double Everton raid

The Daily Record are reporting that Kevin Thelwell has convinced Rangers to raid Everton for a second time with the appointment of a new Academy Director.

According to the report, Thelwell is lining up Everton Academy Director Gareth Prosser to take up a similar role at Rangers as the Toffees go through a period of executive restructuring.

Thelwell appointed Prosser to the role at Everton in the summer of 2022 after the pair worked together at Wolves.

The Gers are set to prioritise the Rangers Academy under the club’s next ownership, building a stronger bridge between the club’s youth squads and first team.

Prosser will be tasked with heading up the Rangers Academy and will work under Thelwell should the deal go through.

Gareth Prosser to finally replace Zeb Jacobs

Rangers have been operating without an Academy Director ever since Zeb Jacobs left the Ibrox club for Feyenoord in the summer of 2024.

Rangers had appointed Belgian youth coach Jacobs on the recommendation of Michael Beale in 2021 and he was eventually promoted to an Academy Director role in 2023.

But the Belgian would only last one year in the job with Jacobs’ departure eventually leaving the Ibrox side without an Academy Director, CEO, Director of Football and Director of Football Operations.

Rangers Technical Director Nils Koppen had been fronting up the academy responsibilities but the appointment of Prosser will ensure greater focus on the youth set-up.
