The name Kevin Mbabu might not ring any immediate bells to Rangers fans. After all, the Swiss defender never actually pulled on the Rangers shirt.
But back in 2015, he signed amidst all kinds of controversy at the club.
Mbabu, along with four other players of varying qualities, joined Rangers on loan in the January of the 14/15 season. All of them given to us by the good grace of one Mike Ashley and Newcastle.
But out of the five players, Kevin Mbabu, 23, seems to have done the best of the lot. Now at BSC Young Boys Transfermarkt rates him at £8.55 million. The right back was also linked with a return to St. James Park and the likes of Valencia in the Summer.
He’s very highly rated in Switzerland. He never got the chance to show it in Scotland.
It’s a shame, because it looks like he’s going to go on and do good things in the game. Who’d have thunk it?
Where are they now?
It was a very strange time.
We had a season to save when they all signed. Only Haris Vuckic really contributed to doing so (9 goals in 22 appearances). It still wasn’t enough.
The rest mustered three appearances between them. Mbabu and Gael Bigirimana never kicked a ball. This is peak Banter Years behaviour all of this.
Vuckic – who always looked decent – is now the #10 at FC Twente. At 26, we might yet hear more from him in the future.
Bigirimana, 24, is of course now at Motherwell. Remie Streete, 23, has made over 50 appearances for Port Vale. Shane Ferguson, 27, has found a home at Millwall, already making over 100 appearances.
But there will probably never be a stranger time in any of these player’s careers than their controversial loaning to Rangers.
Signing the loanees was a very strange move and I can’t recall every seeing anything like it in football before or since.
With plenty of time left, we might yet cross paths with them all again too.
But would you ever take any of them back?
