Kenny Miller has given his reaction to Ally McCoist’s all-time Rangers XI and his honest thoughts on James Tavernier’s omission from the side.

McCoist is a Rangers Hall of Fame inductee, the most decorated player in the club’s history and Rangers’ all-time top scorer with 355 goals scored.

So the legendary Ibrox figure is the man to approach if an all-time Rangers XI is to be compiled.

And that’s exactly what he did with broadcaster TNT Sports before Gers faced Benfica in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Ally McCoist branded the task ‘unenviable’ and ‘bordering on impossible’ but at the end of the nine-minute long feature video posted on TNT’s YouTube channel, the 61-year-old – who did not select himself – had an XI full of incredible names.

Ally McCoist’s all-time Rangers XI

Ally went for an unconventional 3-5-2 formation because he was keen to get ‘as many attack-minded players’ in his XI as possible.

Current Rangers captain James Tavernier, who is also in the Rangers Hall of Fame and is one of the all-time top scoring defenders in the history of the game, missed out and may feel unlucky not to be there.

Tavernier has scored well over 100 goals for Rangers as a right-back so does Kenny Miller believe there should be a place for the Englishman in Ally’s side?

Kenny Miller’s verdict on McCoist all-time XI

Speaking to OLBG, Miller reacted to the XI and was specifically asked if Tavernier would be in his own all-time Rangers XI.

The former Rangers striker argued there might be case for it but ultimately, Tavernier needs to add a few more trophies before being properly considered.

Miller said: “I’ve seen Ally’s team, there are a few older players that are in it and rightly so.

“If you’re talking about an all-time XI, I still think Ally needs to consider his (Tavernier) numbers in terms of his goals and assists, and I played with James, he’s a great lad.

“He’s been an amazing player for Rangers as well as incredible value for money.

Mark Warburton bought him in 2015, and what he has delivered when it comes to goals and assists is incredible. He never misses a game either, he plays every single week.

“However, I think for him to be talked about in a Rangers all-time XI, I think he probably needs to put another few trophies in the cabinet before he can be talked about in that breath.

“Sandy Jardine never even got in; I think down to the formation that Ally chose.

“However, as a right back, I think there are a few guys that would probably just be ahead of him in terms of what they’ve achieved at the club.

“But who knows in a few years, he might even add a few more trophies to his cabinet in the next few months.”
