Fans of Juventus would reject the Serie A title if Italian officials tried to award it to them amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report in Spain.
The Italian giants currently lead the top tier of the nation’s football pyramid by a solitary point with Lazio and Inter in hot pursuit during one of the tightest Italian title races in years.
With Juventus top, earlier reports suggested that they could be awarded the title [ANSA] as Rangers and other clubs in Scotland wait patiently to find out the outcome of the league season here.
But if Juventus are awarded the trophy then fans would reject it due to the circumstances in which it is being awarded, at least according to Diario AS.
The leading European footballing newspaper has claimed that the “feeling among fans of the Old Lady is that refusing the Scudetto is the only correct course of action” if the season is cancelled.
The newspaper claims that this is a sentiment echoed by club president Andrea Agnelli, who liked a post suggesting Juventus should reject the title.
There are similarities with Scotland here in that Juve have completely dominated the domestic top tier for seasons, winning the last eight league titles like rivals Celtic.
But unlike rivals Celtic, Juventus are not as desperate to clamour for a title they have not yet earned.
Earlier in the week, there were claims that both Rangers and Celtic should feel embarrassed for not embracing the spirit of a footballing community [Alan Pattullo] like what is happening in Germany.
But surely the Parkhead club stands alone in this regard if they continue to push to be awarded a title by default?
