Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has leapt to the defence of Rangers and the management team by suggesting his team were simply too good rather than the Ibrox side being so bad.
The Gers suffered a second-half collapse against Premier League giants Liverpool to lose 7-1 at Ibrox; the club’s single worst home result in history.
Also the Gers’ worst-ever European result, the hammering came despite Rangers taking a first-half lead and competing with the Anfield club heading into halftime.
An injury to stalwart vice-captain centre-back Connor Goldson on the cusp of halftime certainly didn’t help, but there can be no excuses for such a pathetic relapse as questions continue over the courage of a Rangers team who have too often shown a propensity for throwing in the towel.
Jurgen Klopp praises Liverpool in Rangers win
Speaking after the match Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claimed that the result was more about his side going up a gear than it was about Rangers soiling the bed.
“Of course I am happy that we scored goals, but we didn’t come here thinking we wanted to score seven goals – not at all,” said Klopp [Liverpool].
“If we win this game tonight 2-1 I am over the moon as well, so it is all fine. The way it went then, this can happen and it was then really difficult for Rangers to defend us in these moments.
“I know you will probably write tomorrow about a breakdown or whatever; I don’t think so, we were then really just on it and meeting us in the wrong moment is not cool.
“Meeting us in the wrong moment for us was now too often not too cool for us, so we have to change that and that’s what we are working on.”
The result means Rangers remain without a win in Group A, but remarkably could still qualify for the Europa League if results still go their way in the final two matches.
Meanwhile, the worst could yet be to come from the devastating Rangers defeat to Liverpool.
