Details of Rangers’ move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Juninho Bacuna have been detailed by the English Championship club’s chairman.

Phil Hodgkinson was speaking after the Gers finally got their man following a six-month pursuit of the Dutch-born Curacao international which stretches back to January.

In some very interesting comments, Hodgkinson reveals that the deal – which he describes as a “really good” one for his club – doesn’t involve an initial transfer fee.

Instead, Rangers have got Bacuna, 24, on a structured deal that is based on appearances both domestically and on the continent.

Not only this, but Huddersfield claim they have a substantial sell-on clause in the player’s contract which Hodgkinson is convinced the club will recoup the £2m they paid Groningen for the player whilst they were a Premier League club in 2018.

“We had interest from two or three clubs in the [January] window,” explains Hodgkinson [Yorkshire Live].

“Rangers were interested in him back in January and they came back in, and we ultimately did a deal where we didn’t get a transfer fee up front but we’ve actually done a really good deal where it’s appearance-based, European-based, with a big sell-on, so we’ve got a significant sell-on, where we will ultimately from that deal at least get our money back.”

Rangers fans are eager to see Bacuna in action and it’s telling that the backroom staff at the club had the player on their radar for so long.

This weekend’s match with St Johnstone may well provide the perfect opportunity for that to happen with Bacuna yet to make an appearance in a Rangers shirt.

Meanwhile, a one-time reported Rangers target has been officially unveiled at a European club despite reportedly turning out at Auchenhowie
