Speaking on the This Is Ibrox podcast, South African journalist Lorenz Köhler has urged Steven Gerrard to unleash new signing Bongani Zungu at Rangers.
The Gers brought in Zungu on an initial loan deal from French Ligue 2 side Amiens on deadline day.
The 28-year-old had been linked with the club for several months before the move eventually went through and his debut has been further delayed by a two-week quarantine following his arrival in the U.K.
Köhler’s comments suggest he could be worth the wait, though, as long as he’s used correctly.
“In my opinion, he’s best as a box-to-box midfielder because he’s an all-action player who just wants to be involved,” he told the This Is Ibrox podcast. “He likes to take the game by the scruff of its neck.”
“It’s going to sound ludicrous…when Yaya Toure left Barcelona, he was playing as a centre-back. He came to the Premier League and the manager saw that ‘this guy isn’t a centre-back’.
“I think the same can be said to Gerrard. He’ll take one look and say ‘this guy is not a defensive midfielder’. Unleash him. Let him be free, let him go forward. He’s got a bit of height to him, he can score from headers, he can find the top corner. He can do everything.”
S.A journalist urges Gerrard to unleash Bongani Zungu at Rangers – Verdict
These comments will certainly get plenty of Rangers fans excited.
Coming from South Africa via stints in Portugal and France, he’s an unknown quantity for many and right now, it’s hard to see how he fits into the Gers midfield.
There were calls for the manager to sign a box-to-box type player all summer, though, and if he can hit the heights Köhler expects him to, Rangers might take up their option for a permanent deal in the summer.
Zungu made the bench for the Europa League win over Lech Poznan on Thursday night, but with fewer substitutes permitted in the Premiership, he may miss out on the squad for the trip to Kilmarnock on Sunday.
