According to Jordan Campbell of The Athletic, Fashion Sakala missed Rangers’ 1-0 defeat at Dundee United on Saturday because of a ‘minor injury’.
Sakala joined up with the Gers squad late for pre-season due to a number of complications following his move from KV Oostende in Belgium.
He got straight into the action, though, playing in friendlies against Brighton and Real Madrid before starting the Premiership opener against Livingston last weekend and featuring off the bench in Malmö in midweek.
However, he was a surprise absentee from the matchday 18 on Saturday afternoon at Tannadice, particularly as Kemar Roofe also didn’t travel due to a family issue.
No official update was given on Sakala either before or after the fixture, but Campbell provided some insight on Sunday morning.
In a piece on the match for The Athletic, he wrote: “It is understood Fashion Sakala was left out of the squad because of a minor injury.”
The inclusion of the word ‘minor’ suggests Sakala isn’t likely to be out for a long time, which will be a relief for supporters.
However, with a crucial Champions League qualifier only two days away, the 24-year-old is surely now a doubt to face Malmö at Ibrox.
Even if Roofe was in a position to play, he is currently serving a UEFA suspension, so Sakala missing out would leave Steven Gerrard relatively light up front, with Jermain Defoe not on the Champions League player list.
The Light Blues know they must beat the Swedish giants if they are to progress and there’ll be plenty of pressure on Alfredo Morelos and Cedric Itten if the Zambia international is ruled out.
An Ibrox-linked player who could bolster Rangers’ attacking options before the end of the window was absent from his current club’s matchday squad on Saturday amid transfer speculation.
