Journalist claims Rangers came "so close" to signing Serie A international

Rangers came “so close” signing Sampdoria midfielder Jakub Jankto in the summer, according to a leading Italian football journalist.

Fabrizio Romano also claims that Steven Gerrard’s side was battling La Liga club Getafe for his signature on deadline day.

Rangers would instead opt to sign South African international midfielder Bongani Zungu instead, the midfielder coming in on a deadline day £2.7m loan-to-buy deal [Daily Record].

It’s not the first time that reputable Italian journalist Romano has mentioned Jankto in the same breath as Rangers either.

Romano claimed on the Here We Go podcast in October that the Gers came close to signing the player on deadline day with Bundesliga clubs also watching the 24-year-old powerful Czech midfielder.

“The player was Jakub Jankto, from Sampdoria, [who] was really, really close to joining Rangers on deadline day,” said Romano [Here We Go].

“I don’t know if [this] was public or not. He was really close to joining Rangers.

“They didn’t find [an] agreement with Sampdoria, but, let’s see what will happen in January because Bundesliga clubs are interested [in the player].”

Reports in Italy [Sky Italia] – quoted via the Daily Record and Scottish Sun – have also claimed that Rangers are still monitoring the player after the failed summer move.

With a wealth of talent in the midfield at Ibrox, signing Jankto would be a statement of intent as the Gers look to build on a solid start under Steven Gerrard this season.
