Rangers have agreed a few with Preston over Jamaican midfielder Daniel Johnson, according to a Daily Mirror journalist.

Jonny Hulme is claiming that the Ibrox club are “poised” to sign the player with the deal now coming down to personal terms.

The claim comes after Rangers boss Steven Gerrard pleaded with the Ibrox board to step up their recruitment following a spate of injuries.

“I’ve been really clear that we need to add so I think we maybe need to try to accelerate that,” said Gerrard [BBC Sport].

“Going off what I have just seen in the treatment room, there is definitely going to be two, if not three, missing for a couple of weeks.

“We have lists that we are pursuing but in terms of names and how close we are, it’s a difficult question for me to answer right now.”

Preston North End boss Alex Neil also refused to answer questions about the future of the midfielder after he was missing from the squad for the 1-0 Championship opener defeat to Swansea.

When asked by BBC Lancashire if he could update them as to why Johnson wasn’t on the team sheet BBC Neil simply said “no”.

When pressed on the subject by the Lancashire Post, Neil added:

“I’m not going to discuss any individual player’s situation, that isn’t fair.

“People will jump to their own conclusions and don’t really understand the situation.

“I’m not going to comment on it.”

Johnson, 27, was first linked to Rangers by another Mirror journalist in David Anderson who claimed the Ibrox club had made a £2m bid for the player, who has a year left on his contract.

Johnson hit twelve goals and laid on eight assists in 33 Championship games last season and was part of the reason why Preston managed an admirable 9th place finish.

An attacking midfielder, should the Jamaican sign he will be Rangers’ eighth signing of the transfer window [Transfermarkt].
