A leading South African football journalist has refuted claims that Bongani Zungu failed a medical with Rangers in August.

Lorenz Köhler also claims that a season-long loan move between Amiens and Rangers is “nearly a done deal”, echoing the comments of Times journalist Paul Joyce.

The South African football journo also claims that the player will be eligible to sign a pre-contract with the Ibrox club come January.

Replying to a fan who asked about the deal collapsing previously, Köhler accused the Scottish Sun of making up a story about the player failing a medical due to being overweight.

This would also refute the claims of French publication L’Equipe who also claimed Zungu failed a medical due to his weight to see a deal collapse in August.

That report also claimed that Rangers had resurrected their interest in a deal for the South African international midfielder.

Rangers were said to have had a £3.8m (€4m) bid accepted for Zungu in July [Scotsman] before the deal collapsed with conflicting reports about the circumstances surrounding it.

The story about Zungu failing his medical appears to come from this Scottish Sun report which was rubbished by journalist Joe Crann – the man who broke the story on Rangers’ interest – at the time.

This has now also been refuted by Lorenz Köhler and Rangers fans can perhaps now get excited as reports intensify around the player’s potential arrival at Ibrox.
