Rangers legend Jorg Albertz has explained that the flare up of an Achilles injury prevented him from playing in the Weekend of Legends clash at Ibrox.

The legendary German midfielder had flown into Glasgow for the match and even attended the Edmiston House players’ reception the night before the game.

But during his warm-up with Italian Stallion Lorenzo Amoruso the Hammer pulled up with an Achilles problem that has been plaguing him for the last few months.

It meant that Jorg Albertz couldn’t represent the Rangers legends at the Weekend of Legends and there is no-one more disappointed than the player himself.

Jorg Albertz explains Rangers Weekend of Legends absence

“I’ve got so many questions on my Instagram account asking why I didn’t play yesterday,” said Jorg Albertz on his official Instagram.

“It’s very simple. About nine months ago roughly now, I played a game in Germany and I snapped my Achilles tendon.

“So I went through surgery and I thought nine months now it’s been enough time so I thought yesterday was enough time.

“I kicked a ball with Lorenzo Amoruso for a wee while and it didn’t feel good.

“So I listened this time to my body and not my heart so I made the decision not to play the game.

“I can assure you that the most disappointed person in the stadium yesterday was myself because every Rangers supporter knows that there is nothing nicer for me than pulling on a Rangers jersey and playing at Ibrox.”

The Rangers Legends would miss Jorg Albertz too, with the club’s former heroes falling to a 4-3 defeat against a World XI at Ibrox.

Despite the result, the weekend belonged to legendary former England striker Jermain Defoe, who netted a double in the match for Rangers.

Former Man Utd striker Robin van Persie also showed his class with a double and assist in the game, to leave Rangers fans thinking what might’ve been.
