The battle between Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall has been ongoing for a couple of months now. Thursday night, however, will finally tell us who Steven Gerrard truly prefers out of the pair.
Both men have been vying to play alongside Connor Goldson in this Rangers side since the start of the season. Katic was brought in from Slaven Belupo back in June. Being one of Steven Gerrard’s first signings, the Croatian quickly became a fan-favorite as well as first-choice alongside Goldson.
Then came Worrall. The Englishman arrived at Ibrox with good pedigree from Nottingham Forest back at the end of August. Finally, Katic had some competition for his place. Before that date, Katic racked up 12 Gers appearances and was a hero for helping the club into the Europa League group stages.

Worrall was then given his shot against Villarreal as his Croatian rival rested up. An impressive display against the Spaniards and Ayr United was then followed by a weak outing against Livingston.
Still, however, Gerrard backed him. He’s since played in all three of Rangers’ matches since the Livingston defeat, coming on as a sub in the latest one against Hamilton.
Katic no performing
Katic was the man selected for the trip to the Hope CBD Stadium on Sunday, and he was highly unimpressive. A spell out of the side like he’s had, however, would do that to you. He didn’t look sharp, and you could tell he wasn’t up to match-fitness.
It’s becoming nearly impossible to pick a Gerrard team, despite our best efforts. Just when you think he’s found his best XI, another change is made for the next match.
Thursday night, however, will see him finally make up his mind about the centre-back situation. This isn’t a game Gerrard should be experimenting in. All of the players out on the field at Ibrox should be ho Gerrard deems his best XI.

It wouldn’t be overly surprising if it is Worrall who comes into the mix. Katic’s dodgy display in Hamilton could easily leave him lagging behind in the pecking order for now.
As it stands, Worrall is the man in-form. He’s putting in the better performances between the pair, and is growing into his role in a Rangers jersey. Despite the fact Katic is probably the better defender when both are on their game, don’t expect him to be thrown back in after his Hamilton performance.
It’s a big decision for Gerrard to make, but he finally has to decide who his main man is.
