Joe Aribo has defended his transfer to Rangers following Sunday’s win over Livingston, as quoted by the Scottish Herald.

The 23-year-old midfielder made the switch to Ibrox from EFL Championship side Charlton Athletic in the summer, in a move that drew plenty of criticism, not least from his old manager, Lee Bowyer [Daily Record].

It was asserted that at a crucial time in his career, he wouldn’t be challenging himself enough by moving to Scotland when he should have been looking to establish himself in the English second tier.

Yet, several months in, and after netting his first Premiership goal against Livi, he’s content with his decision.

“It was the right move for me,” said Aribo, as quoted by the Scottish Herald. “I am happy that I made this move and I want to keep improving and progressing under the gaffer and playing for this wonderful club.”

“I came here to play in Europe and to win the title so I am happy to be pushing. I just want to keep pushing.

“I don’t look at what other people say. Everyone has got their opinions but they are not important to me.”

Verdict

Aribo hasn’t had everything his own way since moving to Glasgow and given the strength in depth in central midfield, he’s had to be content with sitting on the bench every now and again.

However, he’s already had some great experiences with the Gers.

He’s played European football for the first time, taken part in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden and played in an Old Firm.

His performances with Rangers grabbed the attention of Nigeria and subsequently, he’s made two appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring against both Ukraine and a star-studded Brazil.

There’s no doubt that the silky midfielder’s career is on an upward trajectory, and that his decision to join Rangers is only accelerating his progress.
